Hi everyone,
We know that many are worried about AI’s broader economic and social impacts. We are definitely not techno optimists and we share much of that concern.
These worries sometimes translate to a resistance against all AI generated content. As an AI-native project, we know some folks will be skeptical of Shatterwake. Some may even dismiss it as “AI slop.” We want to share this note to set the tone on how we use AI in Shatterwake and why.
Firstly, we don’t view AI as a shortcut or a cost-cutting measure for game development. Our goal is to unlock experiences that were not feasible before. We particularly focused on language-first, open-ended play grounded in SRD 5.2, so players get something genuinely new, not cheaper.
Secondly, AI-native games are not rivals to human-made experiences. We’re clear-eyed about AI’s limits. Humans still write the best stories and design the best mechanics. That’s why Shatterwake is built around player–AI collaboration, not AI alone. We expect different strengths than premium CRPGs, not a substitute for them.
Thirdly, unlike many sectors, we don’t see AI as parasitic to games. Prices track player value, not development cost, so we don’t expect overall player spending to shrink. AI lowers barriers and expands scope, but core roles; creative direction, systems design, art direction, community leadership, will remain stubbornly human. The likely outcome is more teams shipping more and bigger ideas. As long as players value great experiences, investments will simply fund more games.
Artwise, we’ll use AI imagery sparingly outside the game and curate it to fit our world. As our resources grow, we’ll commission more human concept art. Inside the build, AI exists to restore imaginative freedom; dynamic dialogue, generative building, and systems that respond to players.
But is the very usage of generative AI not “theft”? Having taught AI ethics at the undergraduate level since 2017, I disagree. I know this topic is polarized. Instead of an argument, you can find the closest articulation of our view .
We hope to earn your trust through transparency, careful design, and respect for players and artists alike. If we succeed, Shatterwake will show how AI can serve human creativity, not replace it.
